OUR STORY
Before performing on stages like the Grammys and Madison Square Garden, Ulf Geist was a 4-year-old boy unwrapping his first drum set on a cold Christmas morning. By age 5, he had formed a family band with his brother on piano, his sister on bass, and his dad on guitar and vocals. They played at local festivals in their small German hometown and at their grandfather’s annual birthday parties, which took over entire restaurants.
Despite being surrounded by music, Ulf struggled to develop his own passion for it. Progress was slow, and daily practice became a chore he dreaded. As a teenager, his interest waned, and he almost gave up on music entirely. Recognizing this, his teacher adjusted the lessons to better suit Ulf’s learning style. Over the years, this rekindled Ulf’s love for music and his dedication to practicing.
When Ulf founded Pasadena Music Academy in Pasadena, California, he was inspired by his own experience to develop two core philosophies for the program:
1. Enjoying the learning process enhances speed and retention.
2. Every student learns differently.
Since the opening of our Pasadena location, we’ve opened additional locations in Monrovia, San Dimas and Rowland Heights.
“I often ask people why they quit music, and they claim they’re not musical. But what does that mean, to not be musical?” Ulf says. “Often, it stems from an experience where they were told that or made to feel that way, and so they quit. I wanted to quit too as a teenager, but my teacher found a way to make music interesting and kept me engaged.”
At Pasadena Music Academy, every instructor understands the responsibility of teaching. If a student struggles, we first examine our own methods. How can we adapt? What can we do differently?
Our goal is to make a difference in the lives of all our students and their families. Whether you’re playing in local bands, a five-year-old taking their first lesson, or returning to music after decades, our instructors share their passion for the craft and work with you towards your musical aspirations.
